EAFA Gallery: Ten Steps To Rejection

Are you guilty of the flaky artist mentality? Do you figure the details don’t matter and the fine print isn’t meant for you? Then our Ten Step Program to Rejection is for you. Simply follow these steps and rejection is guaranteed!

  1. Poor Photographic Images of Your Artwork – bad cropping, poor lighting – I don’t know how to take good photos of my art so I’ll just send what I’ve got.
  2. Mislabeling and Incorrect Sizing – they can’t be that picky!
  3. Unprofessional Presentation – stapled canvas edging, dirty glass, dusty frames, chipped/scratched frames, slipped mountings – nobody will notice.
  4. Artwork Labels – who needs labels on the back of a painting where nobody can see it?
  5. Incorrect Wiring – what’s so special about the wiring—nobody sees that either.
  6. Illegible Label/Inventory Information – I can read my own handwriting just fine.
  7. Wall Label Information – who has time? Just get it in the day of delivery and let the committee deal with it.
  8. Paperwork/Waivers – I don’t have time to make 3 copies. Why in the world do they need 3 copies anyway?
  9. Extra Artwork – I know they said only 5, but I have this other one.
  10. Prospectus – what’s a prospectus? That is just way too much to read and comprehend!
  11. And just for good measure:

  12. Delivery Time and Place – I know I read it somewhere in the prospectus, but I can’t find my copy!
  13. Art Pick-up – What do you mean I have to pick up today?! I thought it was next week.

Do you want to be taken seriously as an artist? Then take yourself seriously and stop perpetuating the flaky artist myth. A lot of time and effort is spent on putting out a detailed prospectus to better assist with your show applications. Please, READ YOUR PROSPECTUS! The next time you aren't accepted into a show—maybe it wasn’t the art!
