President’s Message - September 2011

Lin La Mer

Dear Fellow Members,

EAFA is an organization of volunteers. We are very lucky to have some wonderful people who always step-up and help out no matter what the task. I deeply appreciate these members’ dedication and selfless attitude. Some are longtime members and some are relatively new. All are held in the highest esteem.

My challenge to the rest of you is to get involved. We work best when the many do a little rather than the few doing much. You don’t have to become a board member to make a difference. We are over 400 strong. If each of you could volunteer to sit the gallery once a month, help with hanging a show a couple of times a year, set-up or clean-up for a reception, or help out at the general meeting in the kitchen, it could make a huge difference. There are so many little things that can really help with running the organization.

I am focused on making EAFA the best totally volunteer arts organization in the area. To do that, I need your help. I am asking all of you to give EAFA your time, experience, and talent. One hour a month can make a difference. I want to see some new faces in our crews. It is one of the best ways to get to know other members. You really get to know someone when you work with them. We also add strength to our organization, because one more person understands a job, as well as understanding how that job affects other parts of the project.

I know some of you are unable to do the physical jobs, but you can sit the gallery or help with check in at a show. You can come to openings and talk to people about art, or if you’re in the show you can talk about your work. There are small things everyone can do to help out. If you are a veteran EAFA member, reach out to new people. Encourage them to enter the monthly contest, exhibits at the EAFA Gallery, and our juried shows. Do a little mentoring; all of us have had someone help us along the way. Giving back helps the entire community. You may learn more by teaching than you realize. Remember, we all have one thing in common. We may have different views on politics, religion, money, and what is taught in public schools, but art, the love of it, the making of it, and the sharing of it, is a common thread in all our lives.
