Charles uses his executive skills to seek out grant sources for EAFA. He's been retired since 2005. He began his career as a sixteen year old cadet in the British Merchant Marine service and ended it by managing a major international shipping line. His unique childhood living on board a sailing barge on the River Thames led to this romantic career. He advanced steadily to qualify for an unlimited Master’s license on the international seas - a course which took him from Great Britain to New Zealand, New York, San Francisco and now to Bellevue.

It is no surprise that, as an artist, he devotes himself to marine painting. The waters of Western Washington provide him with the “beauty, color and mood of an everyday day at sea and ashore” - all of which he brings to his work. Charles doesn’t remember a time when he was not interested in painting. For fifteen years, he used watercolors, but switched to oils a few years ago. He studied with Austin Dwyer, the well know marine artist and illustrator. Charles finds that the texture of oils lends itself well to the motility of water.

When not painting, he skippers his sailing vessel, the Mallory Tod. You correctly assume that he continues to be an avid yachtsman, but has raced and cruised boats of various sizes on many of the world's waterways. Happily at home in the Pacific Northwest waters, he gives back to the community by teaching sailing as a volunteer at the Center for Wooden Boats in Seattle. Fortunately, he also shares his time and talents with us to seek out sources for the grants that are important in carrying out our goals at EAFA.
