Nov 17th - Bill Evans

Where could you find a series called "Fat Men In The Shower", over 300 wrinkled old people's heads, orangutans, elephants, rhinos, and a black lab named North? In the Queen Anne art studio of sculptor Bill Evans.

Bill’s sculptures have been published in 11 books. He is represented at Sisko Gallery and Northwest Craft Center at Seattle Center. He is a featured artist at Fountainhead Gallery, Edison Eye Gallery, Lucia Douglas Gallery and Art Stop. He received the jurists award in the International Illustration Competition ASA, Honorable Mention at Frye Art Museum and at the Perspectivist Salon Show at the New York School for Interior Design Invitational. His work is currently published in the Art of Architectural Illustration book representing 40 illustrators worldwide and also published 40 animal illustrations in Microsoft Encarta.

For his clay people sculptures, Bill says he gets his inspiration from remarkable features such as a large nose, receding chin, deep set eyes, or even a newspaper ad, billboard sign or a piece of paper lying in the street. He produces sculptures every day of the week and works out every day so he will have the strength to life the sculptures weighing from 20 to 150 pounds each. Every evening you will find Bill at one of his 4 favorite places with sketch book in hand drawing people who are completely unaware that he is drawing them.

Bill says he takes everything he does seriously. He tries to express what each sculpture might be feeling or thinking. Through gestures and facial expressions, he considers his work a constant learning process and says he always will. He told me there is too far to go to ever get good enough. People comment on the textural development of his sculptures, but most of all he hears comments about how expressive his work is. Some customers say their sculptures talk to them. They won’t tell Bill what they say.

At our November meeting come and meet the remarkable sculptor who has thousands of sculptures in his huge studio, has taught at numerous galleries and schools and currently teaches sculpture at Gage Academy of Art. Bill will take us through a slide show of animal construction, discuss armatures including the one he invented, describe the sculpting process, tell us the three essential things every artist needs to know before attempting any type of art, and demo a sculpture for us.
