Dear Fellow Members and Artists,

In spring I wax nostalgic because it’s so refreshing to see something colorful popping up weekly. I moved to Seattle in February of 1982 from Wisconsin and was amazed that after four months here, spring kept unfolding. This area never ceases to give me that “wow” factor when viewing the mountains, greenery, and water.

Spring gives inspiration to many artists. It allows us to get out in nature and stop the hibernation. Whether it’s the tulip fields, the snow geese, that single stem or a newborn calf, there’s a plethora of subject matter just waiting to be interpreted BY YOU. Just as predictable as the change of seasons and the phases of the moon, are our reactions to them. We continue to find a renewed inspiration, something that touches us as if we’re seeing it for the first time or finally tackling it after promising to do it “some day.”
For those of you who are a bit more adventurous, I’m throwing out a challenge. Paint the green moss that accompanies all that beauty. It’s there under the dead leaves and unfolding shrubs, covering your rooftops, sidewalks and patios. For good measure, throw in a slug or two. Right, it’s far easier for the eye to skip over the seemingly ugly. Yet again, my plants of the Northwest teacher said that “moss is good because at least it’s green.”

Your President, Charlette Haugen
