WINNERS IN EAFA'S BIG SHOW

Winning first place in the first juried show she entered was not in the dream of a very young Carolyn Bowers many years ago. She wanted to be an artist, but her father persuaded her that she needed something more stable to depend on. "Besides, artists are a dime a dozen," he said. So she decided on architecture. She loved working in that profession for 20 years before going back to her original dream. She began painting ten years ago.

Last May, when Bowers walked into the back courtyard of the Hawaiian hotel she became intrigued with the late afternoon shadows hitting the stucco facade. She knew it had to be a painting. She brought back several photos from which to paint in her favorite medium, watercolor.

Ned Mueller, the awards co-juror selected a mixed media work for second place. At the gala reception, Donna Watson's "Destiny" won it. She says, "It's one of my "Tracings" series in which I am exploring my Asian family history."

A photograph took third place -- Ron LaRue's "Quiet Moment." LaRue is a retired Marketing Director who was always interested in photography.

Ted Pankowski, the show's co-chair says, "Of the 248 entries, Caroline Buchanan, the selections co-juror, chose 113 works for the show. Artists from Bellingham to Portland (many professional and some not) make this avery strong, all-encompassing show with all painting media represented. Art that is intimate to all of us in our human condition is represented by the artists' understanding and expressions."

In addition to Youth Eastside Services, the exhibition is being co-sponsored by the Bellevue Arts Commission, Standing Ovation, Trader Joe's and ADG Printing.

The show is free and open to the public. Key Center is located at 601 108th Avenue N.E., Bellevue. On display now through November 26th, the hours are Mon-Fri 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
